Interior Design in Manhattan

An interior designer for Manhattan homes

Manhattan interior design is our in-person residential work across the island: pre-war co-ops, new condos, lofts and townhouses, designed to feel refined, layered and genuinely yours. We work in person from the Upper East Side to Tribeca, and virtually if you prefer. Renter-safe or full renovation, one room or a whole home.

What we design

The Manhattan homes we work on

Every kind of Manhattan home has its own rules and quirks. We design around them, not against them.

Pre-war co-ops

Classic sixes, sevens and eights with the details people move to Manhattan for: beamed ceilings, herringbone floors and real moldings. We update how they live while protecting what makes them pre-war.

New condos and towers

Glass-and-steel condos with light and views but little warmth. We layer in texture, material and a point of view so a new unit feels like a home rather than a listing photo.

Lofts

Tribeca and Soho lofts where the challenge is warming and zoning a large open space without boxing in the volume and light that make a loft a loft.

Townhouses

Upper East and Upper West Side townhouses, multiple floors made to flow as one home, with the original architecture kept and the layout brought up to date.

Studios and small apartments

Where every inch counts. Double-duty furniture, defined zones and vertical storage make a compact Manhattan apartment live far larger than its square footage.

Pieds-a-terre

Second homes and city bases designed to feel effortless and ready: a calm landing spot that works the moment you walk in.

Where we work

Every Manhattan neighborhood, in person

We come to you across the island, uptown to downtown:

Uptown: the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side and Harlem.
Downtown: Tribeca, Soho, the West Village, Greenwich Village and Chelsea.
Midtown and center: Flatiron, Gramercy, Murray Hill, Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen.
Lower Manhattan: the Financial District, Battery Park City and the Seaport.

Beyond the island? We also design across New York City, in Brooklyn and Westchester, and virtually nationwide.

How we work

Design that fits how Manhattan lives

Manhattan is a mix of owners with boards to answer to and renters who still want a real home, so we work two ways and you pick the level of help.

Full residential design

For owners who want it handled: layout, sourcing and install for the whole apartment or a single room, planned within your building’s rules. See full-service design.

Renter-safe design

Reversible, removable upgrades that transform a leased apartment and lift out clean on moving day. Our full approach is on the rental-friendly design page.

Virtual, on your schedule

Skip the visits: share your space, get a complete plan and a shoppable list you install yourself. See virtual design.

Why us

Design led by someone who thinks in numbers

Michael Intérieurs is led by Michael Charles, who spent two decades in data science before training at the New York Institute of Art and Design. Every choice is made for how a Manhattan home actually performs and feels once you live in it, not just how it photographs. Rated 5.0 on Google.

★★★★★

Michael has an incredible eye for design, detail and functionality. His vision made the entire project come together beautifully. Would absolutely recommend. 10/10.

Very professional and dedicated. He took time to visit my apartment to give me an estimate and draft examples of what we could do. Very impressed.

Questions

Manhattan interior design, answered

Do you handle Manhattan co-op and condo board approvals?

Yes. Most Manhattan buildings have alteration agreements and board rules, and we design within them: what the building allows, which contractors are approved, and the documentation a board wants to see. For renters we keep everything reversible, so there is nothing to approve.

Which Manhattan neighborhoods do you cover?

All of them, in person: the Upper East and Upper West Sides, downtown from Tribeca and Soho to the West Village and Chelsea, Midtown, Flatiron, Gramercy and Murray Hill, and up through Harlem.

How much does an interior designer cost in Manhattan?

It depends on scope and how hands-on you want us. A per-room Quick Fix starts at $500, a full virtual plan you install yourself at $1,000, and full-service, where we design, source and install, at $1,200. The pricing page has the full breakdown, and the cost guide covers what drives it.

Do you offer virtual design for Manhattan apartments?

Yes. If you would rather skip in-person visits, we design your Manhattan apartment online: you share photos and measurements, and we send a complete plan and a shoppable list you install at your own pace, for a fraction of full-service pricing.

The local brief

Designing for Manhattan, specifically

Manhattan design is its own discipline. The buildings, the rules and the square footage shape every choice.

The pre-war co-op reality

Manhattan’s best apartments come with the most rules: board approvals, alteration agreements, approved-contractor lists and a lobby you cannot block for a week. We plan around them from the start, so the project actually gets approved and finished.

Small-footprint luxury

Manhattan square footage is the most expensive in the country, so every inch has to earn its place. We design for storage, flow and double-duty without the apartment ever feeling crammed.

The Manhattan look

Refined, layered and personal rather than showy: natural materials, art-forward walls and comfort that reads as considered, the quiet-luxury end of design rather than the trend end.

That is the balance most Manhattan clients want, elevated but livable, and it is what we design to.
