Should you add a powder room?

In France, it is common that the toilets are separated from the bathroom or to have an additional powder rooms called guest restrooms (toilettes d’invités). In very old houses, toilets were originally composting toilets sitting outside in a small shack. Whereas in old parisian buildings, apartments would share toilets in the hallway. When homeowners integrated them inside their homes, they installed them on their own, separated from the bathroom. Even though a consequence of former constraints, it is still a practical design. I love a nice guest powder room as it is a small room where creativity and style can go rogue, if we dare!

Toile de Jouy Inspired Powder Room

This small powder room of about 25 sq ft at La Ferme@Hasbrouck will feature a toilet, a small vessel sink and a wall faucet. The 18th century fabric called toile de Jouy inspired the overall style. It features patterns depicting landscapes and/or pastoral everyday life situations and our grandparents homes commonly featured those designs on wallpaper. As with any trends, it has been coming back lately in interior decoration. It can add a very distinct mood, somehow old fashioned yet timeless.

I was able to score some beautiful toile de Jouy fabric in the Parisian fabric district (“marché Saint Pierre” at the foot of Montmartre). I chose it in shades of red to drape the French glass door with a custom made curtain. Moreover, panel moldings will frame the same fabric on the walls. The addition of wainscotting and dramatic lighting above the sink and the toilet will create a very distinctive style. Careful not to spend too much time there!

A powder room is usually located on the main level of a home and is separate from the main bedrooms to make it practical for your guests. It keeps your full bathroom private and provides an extra bathroom that guests can easily access.

If you’ve scrolled through real estate listings, they will always list the number of full and partial bathrooms, and potential buyers love to see both included. You should book a free consultation with us to decide if a powder room should be part of your next home renovation plans!
